Today at Montessori we celebrated three birthdays: Eamon turned three years old last Monday, and Lilly (pictured) and Jacob turn three this Wednesday . We sang the 'Earth Goes Around the Sun' song to each child as they took the opportunity to walk the globe around a lit candle. Each revolution of the globe represented a year of the child's life and the parent was able to share with the group something the child was doing at each age.
In addition to telling the child that they are unique and special this celebration ritual becomes a lesson in both history (the child's personal story) and cosmology with the symbolic relationship of the Sun and Earth and how it relates to the passage of time.
